NFL 2023: Five Best Tight Ends Still Available In Free Agency (2024)

A look at the top free agents still looking for jobs continues. There’s already been a look at the running back and wide receiver positions when it comes to veteran players that remain on the open market.

It’s not necessarily a star-studded crop when it comes to tight ends looking to latch on with an NFL team. However, don’t be fooled into thinking a team in need of a performer for a specific role can’t find what it wants.

5. Geoff Swaim (Tennessee Titans)

The 246tt overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft has done alright for himself and seemed to find a home in Nashville with the power-oriented Titans’ offense. Via Pro Football Focus, eight-year pro Geoff Swaim grades out as a better run-blocker than pass-protector and that’s just fine with head coach Mike Vrabel.

Will new general manager Ran Carthon bring back Swaim, who has played in 43 regular-season games (37 start) with the club the past three seasons? He’s totaled just 52 receptions over that span, but five of those grabs have been for scores.

4. Marcedes Lewis (Green Bay Packers)

Talk about veteran experience? In the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars made UCLA tight end Mercedes Lewis the 28th overall selection. He totaled 375 receptions, 33 for touchdowns, in 12 seasons with the franchise and was a Pro Bowler in 2010.

Over the past five seasons with the Packers, he has been celebrated for his blocking prowess. Lewis played in 81 regular-season games and caught a combined 57 passes, six for scores. He also played in five playoff contests for Matt LaFleur’s club from 2019-21 and totaled six receptions (1 TD).

3. MyCole Pruitt (Atlanta Falcons)

He has bounced around during his eight seasons in the NFL. The former Southern Illinois product began his pro career with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015. There have also been stops in Chicago, Houston, Tennessee and Atlanta. With the Falcons in 2022, MyCole Pruitt played in 13 games and made four starts.

He currently grades out as Pro Football Focus’ fifth-ranked tight end, due mainly to his performance as a pass-blocker. With Arthur Smith’s club in ‘22, Pruitt caught just 16 passes for 150 yards. However, he tied for the team lead with four scoring grabs.

2. Jesse James (Cleveland Browns)

Once a fifth-round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015, the former Penn State product has suited up for three different teams (Lions, Bears and Browns, respectively) the past three years. He played in the first two games for Cleveland this past season but suffered a biceps injury in that second contest vs. the Jets and did not take the field again.

After a quiet rookie campaign with Mike Tomlin’s club, he finished with 120 receptions, good for 1,189 yards and nine touchdowns in four seasons with the Steelers. Could he rejuvenate his career in the right situation?

1. Cameron Brate (Released by Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Rob Gronkowski got lots of attention during his two-year stay with the Buccaneers (2020-21). Take nothing away from unsung tight end Cameron Brate, a former undrafted free agent from Harvard who spent nine seasons with the organization but was cut loose this offseason.

In 126 regular-season games with the franchise, he finished with a solid 273 catches for 2,857 yards (10.5 average) and 33 scores. Brate only played in 11 games this past season, caught just 20 passes and zero for touchdowns – the first time since his rookie year in 2014 that he didn’t score.
